Trends vs. Classics
What are they, really?
Trends are “of the moment” while classics are indistinguishable by time. Trends trickle down from designers and high fashion houses. Classics are those pieces that you replace only when they wear out.
I think this is really important to understand because if you are letting trends completely dictate what you’re wearing then there is no possible way that you are honoring your personal style.
You can bring trends into your closet when you truly love them and they make sense for you. A good question to ask yourself is whether you would still buy the item if it was no longer trendy. Or, once the trend has passed, will I continue to wear it? Answering these questions honestly can help you decide whether you are being swayed to purchase an item because you love it forever, or because somebody else in the fashion world said people just have to have it.
When you are familiar with your personal style aesthetic, these types of questions will be easy for you to answer. If you don’t have an established style, then this will be much more challenging. I work with all of my clients to establish their aesthetic which not only leads to them having a more satisfying wardrobe but helps when shopping to make smarter decisions.
Sometimes, brands take a classic piece and make it a trend with their logo or some other distinguishable detail. For instance, Veja shoes are a trend with their distinguishable colored V but a white sneaker itself if a classic piece.
My favorite classics are: a denim jacket, white button-up blouse, gold or silver hoop earrings, and a leather jacket.
Street fashion is creating a trickle-up effect which is interesting. Many trends are pulling inspiration from the younger generation, but whether they will become classics remains to be seen…
You can make your classic pieces look more modern by how you are styling and manipulating the garment. Over time the fit that is considered in or trendy changes so much. Sometimes more oversized or more fitted can be more in style. Consider how you can manipulate the garment to make it more of the moment if that is important to you.
Tips for investing
If you are purchasing a piece of clothing that you acknowledge as a trend then you should not be spending a large sum of money. Invest wisely in classic pieces that will serve you over a much longer period of time. I am not a fan of fast fashion; however, if there ever was a piece that I knew I wouldn’t wear beyond a season I would shop at Zara or other fast fashion houses.
Choose wisely! Even when shopping fast fashion, be sure to check on the quality of the garment. If there are any obvious signs of the garment falling apart quickly, pass on it and find a better option at a different store.
